Axel Scheffler is a German-born illustrator based in London. He started his career in advertising and publishing before establishing himself as an illustrator of children's books, known especially for the award-winning The Gruffalo written by Julia Donaldson, which has been translated into over 40 languages.

The Gruffalo was published in March 1999 and has become a modern classic, selling more than 10 million copies worldwide. It has been developed into plays on the West End and Broadway and in 2009 it was made into a 30 minute animated film featuring the voices of Robbie Coltrane, James Corden, Rob Brydon and Helena Bonham Carter.

Axel has collaborated with Julia Donaldson on 15 books including Room on the Broom (2001), The Smartest Giant in Town (2002), Snail and the Whale (2003), and The Gruffalo’s Child (2004). He has also written and illustrated his own books and taken on several commissions. In 2012 he designed all seven Christmas stamps for Royal Mail.
